To Be A Better Mom

Setting a foundation fit soldiersWhen I was around 13 years old, I was in a weight lifting unit in PE class.  Unbeknownst to me, the bar, without any weights, weighed something like 40 pounds.  I could not lift it.  I was probably 80 pounds and could not lift a bar that was half my body weight.  Fast-forward 25 years where I’m pushing a sled that weighs over 100 pounds, thanks to Fit Soldiers.  For the first time in my life, I feel strong.  I can do a pull-up (singular), toe push-ups, and crank out some serious burpees.

Before joining Fit Soldiers, I would spend 45 minutes on the elliptical, going a steady speed while I read a book.  After I was finished, I would maybe do some of the weight machines and would be too embarrassed to do much more than that as I was surrounded by girls in sports bras and dudes that made angry grunting noises while they lifted weights.  I’ve always been on the petite side, but had an issue with my midsection, and this routine was just enough to keep my figure where I was okay with it, but I was never happy, and I certainly never felt fit or athletic.  I kept this up until the birth of my first daughter, which was then followed by a second daughter.  For over three years, I never saw the inside of a gym.

I am a diehard football fan and a few years ago, my beloved Iowa Hawkeyes were in the final four.  I made the entire family dress in our Hawk gear and even posted some pictures on Facebook.  I was so pumped for this evening until someone commented asking if we were expecting a third child.  That was shortly followed by a co-worker asking when I was “due.” That comment finally forced me to get my act together and start working out again.  Our friends, who were current members of Fit Soldiers kept talking to my husband and me about Fit Soldiers and telling us we should try it out.  Finally, after several months of hearing about Fit Soldiers, I came to a friends and family week. I instantly loved it.

There are so many things I love about Fit Soldiers.  The trainers teach about total health – not just the exercise part, but eating right, having monthly goals, and cutting yourself some slack when you need to refocus and re-engage.  From day one, the trainers and members have been so welcoming. I don’t feel intimated or out of place like I used to at the other gyms.   The workouts are never the same, and I never know if I’m walking into a cardio day with 30 second bursts, a strength day with minute sets, or the dreaded “Deck of Cards.”   There are still days that I struggle, and I still consider the sled my nemesis, but I am stronger, more confident, and, for the first time ever, I actually enjoy working out.

Fit Soldiers has helped me work on me, which then translates into the rest of my life with work and kids.  I feel like I put my life on hold for a few years to be a mom, but I now know that I need to focus on me to BE a good mom.  I need to be the healthiest, best version of me for my girls. My girls see that I go to Fit Soldiers several times a week, and they always ask who was the trainer that day and what I exercises we did.  My husband and I are setting a foundation for their health as we continue to work on ours.  Thank you Fit Soldiers for guiding us on how to be happy and healthy!
