Your Perfect Excuse

Perfection is the greatest excuse for never achieving your goals.

The mind is an amazing thing. I’m thinking of how creative it can be in regards to imagining the perfectly fit you! Maybe it’s a certain size clothes, weight, or body fat percentage. We imagine our perfect self making the perfect catch or perfect play and making the highlight reel on SportCenter. Maybe you have a photo of a younger, fitter you on the home screen of your phone. Heck, maybe it’s some celebrity/athlete on your home screen that you’re striving to be like.

The point is in our head we can easily paint this perfect picture of our ‘end result’ and allow it to be such a daunting task that the thought of striving for that goal becomes our greatest excuse for never taking the first step to achieve it. So instead we settle for where we’re at and continue to live through the imagination of perfection in our head.

We wait for the perfect time to start working out, the perfect weather to start running/biking, the perfect schedule with plenty of time, the perfect ‘diet’ to come along, the perfect workout to shed fat, or even perfect joints, like in our younger years, no longer war torn from injury.

Striving for perfection is not a bad thing (although none of us will ever be perfect). When we drop the ‘perfect’ excuse we begin to take ownership and make effort towards our goals. We begin to improve from what is, and move towards what can be.

The better you starts with the first step towards what can be. Although you will never reach perfect, you can certainly be excellent!

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” Vince Lombardi
